  • Represent the foundation within the local nonprofit and philanthropic communities and, when appropriate, provide leadership in the funding community;
  • Research potential grantees and projects in the foundation's area(s) of interest. (It is our policy to visit, if possible, every organization that is considered for a grant);
  • Proactively solicit grant proposals when appropriate;
  • Attend relevant briefings, meetings, and/or conferences on behalf of the foundation, accompanied by board members when they are interested. The purpose: to gain current knowledge about the communities in which the foundation is engaged and about the issues in which the board is interested;
  • Host grant distribution meetings that can include presentations about each organization on the docket, as well as recommended grant amounts that are both appropriate for the grantee organizations and fit within the established grant budget each year;
  • Based on board preference and with board participation if members so choose, craft an evaluation procedure that can inform both the board and the grantees, and provide results of evaluation to the board;
  • Establish and/or maintain foundation membership in national and local philanthropic organizations, including Northern California Grantmakers, the Council on Foundations, and others.
