Interim Request Instructions
updated July 8, 2011

The foundation will review requests of $10,000 or less from organizations that have a one-time emergency need, or pilot a new program. Eligible requests must fall within the general grantmaking guidelines of the foundation and will be considered on a rolling basis, with decisions issued within approximately 30 days of a full review.

The intent of this program is to be responsive to the needs of the nonprofit community, to encourage new ideas within the field, to boost small programs, and to support organizations that the foundation has not yet funded.

To apply for interim grant consideration, please submit a Letter of Intent (LOI).

Complete LOIs should include the following requirements:

  • Letter of Intent (not more than two pages):
    • On organization letterhead with address and phone number
    • An overview of the organization seeking funding
    • A brief summary of the request for funding, including the effort’s objectives and outcomes
    • A single contact, with phone and email information
  • Organizational budget for the fiscal year most congruent with the period of time covered by the request, including secured, pending, prospective sources of funding (not more than two pages)
  • Project budget, if appropriate, for the fiscal year most congruent with the period of time covered by the request, including secured and projected sources of funding (not more than one page)

All interim requests must be emailed to: interim@kimballfoundation.org. Please list your organization’s name and the title, “Interim Grant Request” in the subject line of your submission email.

The foundation will confirm successful receipt of electronic submissions. If you do not receive an email response within 2-3 business days verifying that your proposal has been received, please contact Wendy Yu Einhorn, Program Coordinator, at (415) 561-6540 x212.

Upon review of LOIs, the foundation will invite those organizations with compelling requests to submit a full proposal. Refer to the Full Proposal Guidelines for information regarding proposal requirements. Please note: complete interim proposals do not require a new cover letter. Your LOI will serve as the cover letter.

Once the foundation has received a full interim proposal, funding decisions will be issued within approximately 30 days.
