The William G. Gilmore Foundation was created by the late William G. Gilmore. He built Gilmore Steel Corporation in San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon, and was a philanthropist, sportsman, and civic leader in San Francisco. The William G. Gilmore Foundation is a private, independent foundation which carries on Mr. Gilmore’s philanthropy.

Mission

The William G. Gilmore Foundation makes charitable gifts in Portland, Oregon, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the Bay Area, the foundation supports organizations working in San Francisco, Alameda, and San Mateo counties. The foundation supports academic enrichment for young people; support services for the disabled; and food, shelter, counseling, and arts programs. The foundation prioritizes the continuing support of effective organizations.

The trustees of the foundation meet twice each year, in June and December, to approve grants. Grants range from $1,000 to $100,000 and average about $15,000 in value.

The board of directors of the foundation reviews all proposals and makes all funding decisions. The staff is unable to provide advice or feedback on denials. The staff also cannot provide advice on the application process, which is fully explained on our website. The next submission deadline for EOIs and Renewal Requests is between Monday, March 18 - Monday, April 1, 2013 for the June 2013 meeting.

Renewal Support

Organizations that received support from the foundation in the previous fiscal year may apply for renewal support. Renewal applications should include:

  1. Cover letter, including a contact person
  2. Short narrative:
    • Overview of the organization
    • Need the proposed grant will address
    • Specific activities the proposed grant will support
    • Outcomes the proposed grant will achieve
  3. Financial statements for the two previous fiscal years
  4. Organization budget
  5. Program budget
  6. List of board members, with affiliations
  7. Documentation of 501(c)(3) status

New Grantseekers

Grantseekers that are new to the foundation or received support more than one fiscal year in the past should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). The EOI should be no longer than one page of text and include the following:

• A contact person
• Brief overview of the organization
• The need the proposed grant will address
• The specific activities the proposed grant will support
• The outcomes the proposed grant will achieve
• How the project will be sustained after the period for which support is requested, if applicable

If you do not receive an email response within two to three working days confirming that your EOI has been received, please contact Amy Freeman, Administrator at afreeman@pfs-llc.net.
