Grantmaking Guidelines
updated 06/03/08

Established in 1997, Cleo Foundation supports public charities in San Francisco and Mendocino counties. It is most interested in programs that can make good use of relatively small grants. The Foundation supports programs for the economically disadvantaged. Interests include:

  • Education: organizations and programs that provide youth development for children 11-18 years of age, that enhance academic progress and create a sense of hope for the participants

  • Outdoor Education: camperships, scholarships, field trips, environmental education programs and other educational opportunities that can give young people ages 11-18 a new view of their world

  • Hospice care for all ages

The Foundation prefers to receive requests for specific programs and projects or operating funds, but will consider grants for capital improvements and equipment (but not computers). The Foundation does not support religious entities, medical research, individuals, endowments, or annual appeals.

Most grants range from $1,000 – 20,000, and the Foundation prefers that three years elapse between grants to any given organization. The board holds one distribution meeting per year, and all requests are answered with a written notice within a reasonable period of time.

The next meeting of the Cleo Foundation will take place in September 2008. Proposals for that meeting will be due in the office by 4 PM on May 1, 2008.

Application Procedures

Cleo Foundation does not have an application form. Applicants should submit a brief proposal for a specific amount. Information in this letter and attached materials should include:
